Dakosaurus, despite looking like a small Mosasaur, is actually a type of fully aquatic crocodile. Adapted to the island's rivers and waterways, it is able to travel between them by hauling itself on land, or sometimes clear jumping out of the water! It will often use this to snag aerial prey flying over the water, grabbing them and dragging them underwater to finish them off with a deadly deathroll. They make excellent agile water combatants, so survivors seek them out for taming and protection against Leedsichthys, as their deathrolls are a great attack against the colossal fish, and their versatility means one can go practically anywhere with a Dakosaurus and not worry. However, they are resistant to tranquilizers and far too aggressive to passive tame. Taming them requires a much more clever approach...

The Dakosaurus is capable of hauling itself out of the water, but not in the typical sense. Out of water, it is extremely slow and slowly takes damage. It will also die instantly when dismounted out of water.
- Although given some mechanics to get out of the water, Dakosaurus in life was entirely aquatic. It lived, ate, mated, and gave birth out in the open sea.
- The ability to jump out of the water and the ability to haul out of the water were given to Dakosaurus because of the difficulties one would face navigating such a large purely-aquatic animal through rivers in the first place.
- Dakosaurus's death roll's increased damage to Leedsichthys was an unintentional but welcome mechanic.
